Recreation Specialist

Summary:                                                                                                                                         

Performs specialized work developing and conducting recreational programs, special events and other activities at designated parks, beaches or other recreational facilities within the City of Marathon. Promotes good relationships with residents and visitors who visit or participate in programs at the parks, recreational and beach facilities. Nights and weekends required. Ideal candidate will have a positive attitude and willingness to work outdoors year-round as well as the ability to work independently and be self-motivated.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assists and participates in the planning, organization, and supervision of specialized recreational and athletic programs.
Assists in coordinating a variety of programs, which may include after school, school break and summer programs.
Assists with youth and adult sports programs.
Assists with seasonal camp programs (summer, Thanksgiving, winter, and spring break).
Assists in providing a healthy and safe environment for the public visiting the parks and beaches.
Recognizes, corrects and reports safety issues to supervisor.
Ability to perform tasks which require physical ability in a safe/efficient manner in a variety of weather conditions.
Ability to work a varied schedule based upon the needs of the Parks and Recreation Department (i.e. some special events require different hours).
Performs routine maintenance and custodial duties at recreational facilities and parks as required.
Travel between parks either in city or in personal vehicle to perform routine inspections.
Management of inventory, stocking and maintaining supplies. May compose and provide materials list to supervisor.
Supervises and interacts directly with participants and volunteers in recreational settings, programs and activities.
Monitors and supervises public use of parks and recreational facilities.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary:  $23.40-$27.82 per hour DOQ.

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. One year of college education desirable. One year experience working with and supervising youth in an educational or recreational setting (for youth programs);  one year of training and/or experience with the adult recreation or education programs.  Experience in handling money, making change, writing receipts and depositing funds.  Possession of or ability to obtain a valid State of Florida drivers license. First Aid and CPR certifications.

Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability

Knowledge of:

Personal computer and related software
Principles and practices of organizing and conducting public recreation programs and recreational activities.
Principles and practices of parks and beaches established to meet the leisure and recreational needs of the community groups of all ages.

Skill and Ability 

Record keeping and reporting procedures
Operate a variety of office equipment including personal computer and related software.
Apply sound judgment in the solution of problems related to parks, recreation, and community services activities.
